Are you above?

                                          Or Below the line?

The first lesson delivered to the students on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) was called ‘Above and Below the line Expectations’.

So what does living above the line look like?  Consider all of your thoughts, actions and words.  Consider how people perceive them.  What does the Principal at Sand Creek Community Schools look like when I am ABOVE the line?

I am smiling and laughing with the students.  I am saying “Hello” or “Good Morning” as I greet students at the door and open it for them.  I acknowledge all students as they pass by in the hallways.  If a student needs to talk, I actively listen to them and ask “How can I help you?” and together we find the solution.

What does the Principal at Sand Creek Community Schools look like when I am BELOW the line?  In my wife’s words “Hey Grumpy!”  Saying “Hello” or “Good Morning” would sound more like a rumble of thunder off in the distance.  Opening the door for you?  Are you kidding me?  It is cold and damp out there!  I would not be able to acknowledge any students passing by because my head would be down and looking straight ahead.  When the student needs to talk, I would be immediately providing my solution instead of really listening to their problem.

It isn’t easy to admit what you would look like below the line.  It leaves you vulnerable, but being honest and even vulnerable allows you to find comfort from others.  Being comfortable and open to others allows others to be comfortable in opening up to you.

Let’s try to always live above the line!
