TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION
The overall goal of technology education at Ruth McGregor Elementary is to integrate technology-enhanced learning across all content areas. This focus follows the Michigan Integrated Technology Competencies for Students (MITECS), which was adopted in 2017. (See below for more information on MITECS.)
Students at Ruth McGregor will have scheduled technology education time, twice weekly. During this time, teachers have flexibility to use the computer lab or remain in classroom, using their one-to-one student Chromebook.
During the 2025-2026 school year, as we implement this integrated technology focus, training, resources, lessons and direct instruction modeling will be provided to staff by technology and curriculum consultants through the Lenawee ISD.
Michigan Integrated Technology Competencies for Students (MITECS)
In 2017, Michigan adopted the Michigan Integrated Technology Competencies for Students (MITECS), which are also the ISTE standards (international standards) to replace the older Michigan Educational Technology Standards for Students (METS-S).
MITECS shift the focus from teaching technology as a stand-alone subject to integrating technology-enhanced learning across all content areas.
With MITECS:
Focus is on technology-enhanced learning integrated across all content areas, not as a stand-alone technology class.
Emphasis is on broad competencies (e.g., empowered learner, digital citizen, creative communicator, global collaborator) rather than specific tools.
Aligned with Michigan’s Top 10 in 10 Strategic Plan, promoting a learner-centered approach.
Many schools now embed these skills in everyday lessons, using technology to support research, collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving.
