Good evening, Sand Creek family;

As we continue to hear reports of the tragic events at Oxford High School this past week, our thoughts and prayers remain with Oxford students, teachers, staff and community.

News of this nature that hits so close to home is difficult for all of us.  It is also another unfortunate reminder of the need for continued vigilance in keeping schools and children safe.  Sand Creek Schools continues to be committed to creating a safe school environment where students can learn and grow.

I wanted to take a moment to share with you the various safety protocols we have in place in our district to protect students.

  • -Regular lockdown, fire, tornado and safety drills
  • -Secure, locked entrances at both school buildings
  • -Internal and external security cameras, including bus cameras
  • -Currently expanding our internal camera coverage at both buildings
  • -Staff assisted drop off/pick up procedures at elementary building
  • -Recently enhanced lockdown security system that is directly connected to local law enforcement and 911
  • -Main entrance call in/buzz in systems at both buildings

While we are pleased with our enhanced security protocols and procedures, we also know we need the support of the entire community to protect our children.  The Michigan State Police issued a news release yesterday to remind students of the student safety program, OK2SAY.  This program allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees or schools.  The goal of OK2SAY is to stop harmful behavior before it occurs by encouraging anyone to report threatening behavior to caring adult authorities.  Information on OK2SAY and the link to submit a TIP can be found on our website under both the Student and Parent dropdown.

Sand Creek Community Schools had already scheduled and planned a full lockdown exercise drill in our district for next week in cooperation with the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Department and Madison Township Police Department.  In light of the tragic events of this week, we have cancelled and will be rescheduling this drill for a later date.  Instead of this full lockdown drill exercise, we will be taking this planned time over the coming week to review with our students our lockdown safety procedures.  Teachers will be showing students a video (made specifically for students) that explains our lockdown system and will take the time to answer student’s questions on these procedures.  We felt this step was vital prior to a ‘Live’ lockdown drill.

Please know that we have counselors available in both buildings.  Do not hesitate to reach out to our counselors should you or your child need support.

Thank you for listening and as always, contact your school office with any questions or concerns.  Have a great evening.
